This is an amazing hotel von Beryl McAlhone, 23.06.2010What do you look for in a hotel? Well, whatever it is, if it makes for human happiness the Schwanen has it. Let`s start with style -- because so many Austrian hotels or gasthofs are good but gloomy, a bit depressing with all that dark wood. The Schwanen is ultra-tradtional in its authenticity, but full of light, with blond wood, white starched linens, sleek furniture and witty design. You enter, your heart lifts. But style, what is style, only the surface really. The heart of a hotel is the care of the guest. And this is where the Schwanen is outstanding. They absolutely cannot do enough for you. On an early visit, before we realized the quality of the cuisine, we asked for some potato crisps to have with a glass of beer. But of course the Schwanen doesn`t have bags of crisps. But we had asked for them, so they were hand made for us. One year we wanted to visit on dates when the Schwanen was already full, Disaster. But no, for Wolfgang to disappoint us was not an option. He suggested a nearby Ferienwohnung where we could sleep, while we had all our meals in the hotel as usual. Because the meals are superb. Even breakfast. Wolfgang has a leaflet which tells you where every item on the breakfast buffet comes from -- the butter from the dairy in Schwarzenberg, the bread either home made or from this maker, the jam ditto, and so on through every item offered to you. It`s not only the local-ness of the food which is outstanding, it is the artistry of the cooks, as Antonia and Franciska in the kitchen enrich their lives by inventing wonderful dishes and presenting them as art. Their skill, craft, mastery of taste, and awareness of beauty makes for very happy people in the dining room. And guests who come back again and again. We can`t remember how many years we have been coming to the Schwanen -- 10, 11, 12? We loved it from the start, and since then the hotel has got better and better. The clever and beautiful refurbishment at the end of 2009 was just the latest in a line of intelligent improvements. The Hotel Schwanen had 3 stars when we first knew it. It´s 4 stars now. But actually it`s been 5 stars all the time. | |
